Surgical Output and Clinic Burden of Glaucoma in Lagos, Nigeria

ABSTRACT
To estimate the outpatient clinic burden and surgical workload related to glaucoma in Lagos, Nigeria.A multicentre study involving 2 tertiary eye institutions, 7 secondary centers with care facilities, largest private hospital Lagos state, Nigeria. Data on department (OPD) visits were collected over a 4-week period, using specially designed tally sheet. Theater records examined each 1-year period (2009) for number types of surgeries performed.A total 6240 patients visited OPD out which 1577 (25.3%) patients. visit per ophthalmologist 274, 323, 61, whereas 75, 70, 23 tertiary, secondary, centers, respectively. Glaucoma constituted 8.6% (n=4050). Trabeculectomy intraoperative 5-fluorouracil was most common procedure (81.0%). Number month 0.5, 0.9, 1.4, Overall surgery 1.Glaucoma constitute significant proportion Nigeria, therefore, necessary manpower, infrastructure, equipments should be mobilized its optimal management. Also, there is relatively low output that needs further investigated appropriate measures taken manage it.
