ABSTRACT
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is frequently detected in ulcerative colitis (UC) lesions of steroid-refractory patients. This has led to the suspicion that CMV might cause and steroid refractoriness.During 2003 2011, 187 consecutive patients were divided into group I (n = 105), corticosteroid-free thiopurine-free past 6 months, II 82), all corticosteroid refractory. The combination serum immunoglobulin (Ig)M, IgG, antigenemia (Ag), real-time polymerase chain reaction assays performed identify CMV(+) patients. In I, 79 IgG(+) 26 IgG(-) IgM(-). In II, 61 IgG(+), 1 IgM(+), 20 All screened for Ag. Ag(+). 27 Colonoscopy was before screening CMV. Similar colonoscopic features including punched out ulcers, geographic irregular ulcers found both CMV(-) patients, without any striking difference between 2 groups.CMV reactivation be encouraged by immunosuppressive drugs, like corticosteroids, immunomodulators, therefore, with UC are at a high risk reactivation, potentially exacerbating UC. However, this study CMV(-), could not find unique CMV, except one factor refractoriness, exacerbation.
