ABSTRACT
Little is known about risk factors for biliary pancreatitis in children. We characterized cases of pediatric pancreatitis, compared with nonbiliary cases, examined differences presentation between younger and older children, studied features distinguishing gallstone- from sludge-induced pancreatitis. We evaluated 76 episodes 271 acute children admitted to a tertiary care hospital 1994 2007.Of the 55% had gallstones, 21% sludge, 24% structural defects. Hispanic 2.85 (P = 0.01) 5.59 0.003) times higher probability than white black respectively. Median serum amylase lipase were 64% 49% higher, respectively, other causes < 0.05). In multiple logistic regression, aspartate aminotransferase was an independent predictor (odds ratio 6.69, P 0.001). When comparing causes, obesity (38% more prevalent, gallstone cases.Hispanic ethnicity factor biomarker over causes. Furthermore, can distinguish pancreatitis. These findings may spur prospective studies determine optimal evaluation management
