Wound Infections in Aesthetic Abdominoplasties: The Role of Smoking

ABSTRACT
Background: In this prospective study, the authors followed patients who underwent aesthetic abdominoplasty to determine influence of smoking on occurrence postoperative wound infections. Methods: Patients were considered eligible for study. The excluded postbariatric patients, those with ongoing clinical infections, receiving a recent antibiotic course, and systemic diseases such as arteriosclerosis diabetes mellitus. Smokers advised quit at least 4 weeks before surgery. Results: Starting in February 2004, enrolled 84 patients. Postoperative infections present 13 (15.5 percent) superficial 10 (77 percent). All but one occurred smokers. These had certain number cigarettes smoked per day, years smoking, higher estimated overall when present. relative risk was 12. A cutoff value approximately 33,000 determined 3.3 percent false-positive 0 false-negative rates.
