ABSTRACT
To evaluate arguments given by board-certified surgeons in Switzerland for and against a career surgery.Currently, the surgical profession most Western countries is experiencing labor shortage because of declining interest among new graduates, changed public opinion medicine its representatives, as consequence increasing influence health economists politicians on professional independence surgeons. Reports that focus primarily reasons remain within are rare.Surgeons were asked to answer 2 questions concerning surgery. Of 749 334 (44.6%) analyzed using Mayring's content analysis. The also whether they would choose path again.The participating provided 790 statements 981 Fifty-nine (17.7%) not again. analysis yielded 10 categories with both "Personal Experience Daily Professional Life" (18.7%) was top-ranked category favor surgery, "Specific Training Conditions" (20%) choice such career. Ordinal logistic regression showed (OR, 2.39; 95%CI, 1.13-5.07) independently associated again studying medicine, "Work-life Balance" 0.37; 0.20-0.70) again.This qualitative study revealed unfavorable working conditions regulations surgeons' main complaints. It concluded organizational frameworks perspectives required retain qualified motivated profession.
