Emergency Liver Transplantation in Neonates With Acute Liver Failure: Long-Term Follow-Up

ABSTRACT
Acute neonatal liver failure is a rare condition that often fatal. Liver transplantation (LTx) in affected neonates may be life saving, but there are only few data on the long-term outcome of LTx.We conducted retrospective study 11 LTx performed 10 pediatric patients with acute first month life. Median age at was 15 days (range: 7-31 days) and median weight 3.25 kg 2-4 kg). The reasons for were hemochromatosis (n=5), hemangioendothelioma (n=2), infection caused by echovirus type (n=1), mitochondrial disorder unknown primary nonfunction after (n=1). In patients, organs deceased donors used (reduced size n=5, split n=5), living donor one neonate. evaluated respect to survival, graft function, perioperative complications, neurodevelopmental outcome.After follow-up time 5 years 1-14 years), 8 (80%) alive. Seven them good clinical had normal function tests. One patient undergo retransplantation because another currently listed chronic dysfunction. Neurodevelopment 75% surviving patients.Liver provides short- medium-term results failure.
