Tuberculosis in Liver Transplant Recipients: A Single Brazilian Center Experience

ABSTRACT
Tuberculosis (TB) is an important opportunistic infection in transplant recipients worldwide. The frequency of Mycobacterium tuberculosis disease varies among different regions, but the incidence TB adult liver (LT) largely unknown. estimated ranges from 0.7% to 2.3%, with mortality rate up 30%. However, these data are based on individual case reports or series small samples. In LT recipients, therapy generally associated significant hepatotoxicity and interactions immunosuppressive drugs.This retrospective analysis included 319 patients who underwent at University Hospital, Federal Minas Gerais, Brazil, between September 1994 July 2007 survived more than 1 month. Among these, was diagnosed five patients. No received chemoprophylaxis before after LT.All were women, mean age 39.6+/-16.5 years. Two had disseminated TB, two pulmonary involvement, one extrapulmonary disease. Cultures positive four Overall, isoniazid, rifampin, pyrazinamide for 6 12 months, good tolerance, patient presented recurrence. Another raised hepatic enzymes levels initiating therapy. All alive well.In this series, transplantation 1.57%, no confirmed conventional treatment excellent survival (100%).
