ABSTRACT
The fracture of materials can take place below the critical failure condition via slow accumulation internal damage followed by fast crack propagation. While due to subcritical accounts for most structural failures in use, it is theoretically challenging bridge gap between molecular and mechanics, not mention predicting occurrence sudden fracture, lack current nondestructive detection methods with suitable resolution. Here, we investigate elastomers using simultaneously space- time-resolved multispeckle diffusing wave spectroscopy (MSDWS) mapping mechanophore. We identify a precursor that accelerates strain-rate field over large area (cm2 scale), at considerably long times (up thousands seconds) before macroscopic occurs. By combining deformation or finite-element simulations crack-tip strain field, unambiguously attribute response elastic highly localized occurs sample about 0.01 mm2. unveiling this mechanism interaction microscopic minute but long-ranged are able develop MSDWS as flexible, well-controlled tool characterize predict well becomes critical.
