ABSTRACT
Aims To estimate the effectiveness of pregnancy smoking cessation support delivered by short message service (SMS) text and key parameters needed to plan a definitive trial. Design Multi-centre, parallel-group, single-blinded, individual randomized controlled Setting Sixteen antenatal clinics in England. Participants Four hundred seven participants were intervention (n = 203) or usual care 204). Eligible women < 25 weeks gestation, smoked at least one daily cigarette (> 5 pre-pregnancy), able receive understand English SMS texts not already using text-based support. Intervention All received leaflet; also 12-week programme individually tailored, automated, interactive, self-help messages (MiQuit). Outcome measurements Seven outcomes, including validated continuous abstinence from 4 post-randomization until 36 design for future trial cost-per-quitter. Findings Using validated, outcome, 5.4% (11 MiQuit abstinent versus 2.0% (four 204) [odds ratio (OR) 2.7, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.93–9.35]. The Bayes factor this outcome was 2.23. Completeness follow-up gestation similar both groups; provision self-report data 64% (MiQuit) 65% (usual care) validation rates 56% 61% care). incremental cost-per-quitter £133.53 (95% CI –£395.78 843.62). Conclusions There some evidence, although conclusive, that text-messaging may increase pregnant smokers when provided alongside routine NHS care.
