ABSTRACT
Abstract Background Spinal cord injury often results in erectile dysfunction and an ejaculation along with impaired semen parameters. Fertility is a major concern spinal adult males some fear that the delay post‐spinal may negatively affect sperm quality. Objectives We aimed to (i) assess parameters over time SCI patients according age at injury, level completeness (ii) measure markers for inflammation marker of oxidative stress investigate their impact on Materials Methods The study prospective, longitudinal, pilot 18 months. Thirty‐five men from 60 years were enrolled. Their mean was 29.4 ± 6.4 years. Semen retrieval scheduled every 6 months, allowing analysis four ejaculates, association measurement granulocyte seminal plasma elastase concentrations spermatozoa DNA fragmentation stress. Results Based reference limits, normal total number, decreased motility vitality spermatozoa, increased morphological abnormalities found. Mean round cell elevated semen. Markers several samples, compared limits. However, neither presence or stress, lesion, had negative quality time. Discussion There no significant decline within limitations this study. Moreover, chronic genital inflammatory status not associated impairment Conclusion present findings are reassuring could guide management reproductive ability. According these preliminary data, all who able ejaculate require systematic freezing spermatozoa.
