Diagnosing phyllodes tumours of the breast: how successful are our current preoperative assessment modalities?

ABSTRACT
Background To assess the efficacy of diagnostic modalities used in preoperative assessment phyllodes tumours. Methods In this retrospective study patients treated at Princess Alexandra Hospital, 51 tumours 49 diagnosed between 2005 and 2016 were reviewed with regard to their findings which modalities, including clinical findings, mammography, ultrasound, fine needle aspiration core biopsy, most diagnostically discriminating. Data on demographics management also collected. Results While 90.2% lesions clinically palpable an abnormality was seen 86.1% subjected relation these two essentially those non‐discriminatory masses. Furthermore, although 100% sonographically visible, suspicion a tumour only noted 21.6% cases. Fine yielded results suspicious for 21.1% cases while biopsy resulted confirmed or suspected diagnoses 69.2% instances. Serial measurements average growth rate 8.04 mm per 365 days. Conclusion diagnosis breast, ultrasound more discriminating imaging modality compared demonstrated superior accuracy over biopsy. A significant increase lesion size short timeframe should alert possibility tumour.
