ABSTRACT
Introduction Injuries are a major cause of disability and lost productivity. The case for national trauma registry has been recognized by the Australian Commission on Safety Quality in Health Care at policy level. Background need was flagged 1993 Royal Australasian College Surgeons Trauma Society. In 2003, Centre National Research Disability funded New Zealand Registry Consortium, which produced three consecutive annual reports. bi‐national minimum dataset also developed during this time. Operations were suspended thereafter. Method response to sustained lobbying Improvement Program including (ATR) commenced 2012, with data collection from 26 centres. An inaugural report released late 2014. Result Federal Government provided funding December 2016 enabling work ATR continue. Data currently being collected cases that meet inclusion criteria dates injury 2017–2018 financial year. Since implementation, number submitted records increased fewer than 7000 per year over 8000 as completeness improved. Four reports have available stakeholders. Conclusion commitment shown College, other organizations individuals vision consistent since 1993. is now well placed improve care injured people.
