ABSTRACT
The role of routine intraoperative cholangiograms (IOCs) for prevention bile duct injury (BDI) is contentious. There are recent reports limited utility IOC in preventing BDI. In Australia, IOCs used more frequently than internationally. This study aimed to evaluate the rate use Australia and explore potential changes practice light evolving evidence IOC.Data were collated using service item numbers Medicare Benefits Scheme records on Australian Government website, services claimed between 1 January 2001 31 December 2019. These data analyse trends rates IOC, cholecystectomy BDI repair. Data age-standardized account population over time. The number increased by 31.8% cholecystectomies 7.0% period. Age-standardized per 100 000 persons 5.5 32.6, respectively. Rates steadily across period, while repair remained low erratic.Increasing last 20 years reflects a trend towards rather selective IOC; however, there little discernible change BDIs requiring procedures. suggests that prevent or minimize unwarranted. Further investigation required into high-risk patients mandatory all patients.
