ABSTRACT
Children with single ventricle cardiac disease (SVCD) have poor growth in early life. Tube-assisted feeding (TF) is used to improve weight gain, but its impact on long-term remains unknown. We sought compare the longitudinal of SVCD patients receiving TF after initial surgery those fed entirely by mouth. We conducted a retrospective cohort study who underwent surgical palliation between 1999 and 2009. defined as use nasogastric, gastrostomy, or jejunostomy TF. compared maximal attained z-scores for each year life non-TF patients. A secondary analysis clinical factors groups.A total 134 were included; 64% male 68% Norwood operation. One third (44) received Adjusting age, had an average 0.56 lower weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) than (P = 0.007) through age 6 years. Longitudinal height was not affected status 0.15). In subanalysis patients, WAZ at hospital discharge despite longer LOS. diminished adjusting complications, interstage hospitalizations, timing subsequent operations. In this single-center study, requiring from follow-up, controlling other identifiable risk factors. Further investigation needed understand mechanisms underlying phenomenon stratify infants go home
