ABSTRACT
Abstract The South American and West Indian Casque‐headed Treefrogs (Hylidae: Hylinae: Lophyohylini) include 85 species. These are notably diverse in morphology (e.g. disparate levels of cranial hyperossification) life history different reproductive modes, chemical defences), have a wide distribution, occupy habitats from the tropical rainforests to semiarid scrubland. In this paper, we present phylogenetic analysis hylid tribe based on sequence fragments up five mitochondrial ( 12S , 16S ND1 COI Cytb ) six nuclear genes POMC RAG‐1 RHOD SIAH TNS3 TYR ). We included most its species (> 96%), addition number new Our results indicate: (i) paraphyly Trachycephalus with respect Aparasphenodon venezolanus ; (ii) nonmonophyly Argenteohyla siemersi Corythomantis galeata Nyctimantis rugiceps nested within it, Ap. (iii) polyphyly (iv) recognized groups Phyllodytes (v) pervasive low support for deep relationships among major clades Lophyohylini, including C. greeningi monotypic genera Itapotihyla Phytotriades . To remedy redefined (with exception which transferred ), Additionally, our indicate need taxonomic work following clades: dibernardoi Tr. imitatrix atlas mambaiensis nigromaculatus On basis results, analyzed evolution skull hyperossification biology, emphasis multiple independent origins phytotelm breeding, context Anura. also inter‐related aspects defences, venom delivery, phragmotic behaviour, co‐ossification, prevention evaporative water loss.
