ABSTRACT
Abstract Aims The claustrum has long been regarded as a vital center for conscious control. Electrical stimulation or damage to the can result in decreased awareness loss of consciousness, suggesting that may be target action general anesthetics. This study aimed determine role propofol anesthesia. Methods We first applied fiber photometry calcium signal recording system record claustral neuronal activity during entire process Chemogenetic activation neurones was then performed verify their Finally, muscimol (GABAa receptor agonist) and gabazine antagonist) were microinjected into whether GABAa receptors involved modulating EEG behavioral indicators, such anesthetic sensitivity efficacy, recorded analyzed. Results An evident anesthesia‐related change suppressed propofol‐induced unconsciousness restored following recovery from neurons results attenuated sensitivity, shorter anesthesia duration, an shift toward wakefulness. Manipulation showed bidirectional control decreases efficiency while inactivation augments it. Additionally, inhibiting increases cortical slow waves. Conclusions Claustrum are implicated modulation both assessments. Our findings create scope reveal brain targets further add existing evidence on consciousness‐modulating claustrum.
