Abstract Sweet potato is a valuable staple crop that guarantees food security to large segment of the world population. The wide phenotypic and genetic variability this species an indication its high adaptation capacity diverse environmental conditions. In Colombia, it neglected underutilized crop, mainly managed by traditional knowledge. aim study was recognize contribution in situ conservation characterize habitats uses shed light on design their management strategies. Germplasm data collection were conducted Caribbean Andean regions country. This resulted 750 accessions from 131 municipalities, belonging 19 departments two regions. these regions, sweet has been conserved spatial altitudinal distribution. major sources wild cultivated habitats, which highlight invaluable farmers communities preservation associated seemed be efficient strategy for conserving using plant resources; therefore, should considered efforts.
