ABSTRACT
Abstract Aim To investigate the joint associations of diabetes and obesity with all‐cause cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in Mexico City Prospective Study. Materials Methods In total, 154 128 participants (67.2% women) were included this prospective analysis. Diabetes was self‐reported, while body mass index used to calculate obesity. Using classifications, six groups created: (a) normal (no weight); (b) weight diabetes; (c) overweight but not (overweight); (d) (prediabesity); (e) (obesity); (f) (diabesity). Associations between these categories outcomes investigated using Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for confounder factors. Results During 18.3 years follow‐up, 27 197 (17.6%) died (28.5% because CV causes). maximally model, those highest risk {hazard ratio (HR): 2.37 [95% confidence interval (CI): 2.24‐2.51]}, followed by diabesity [HR: 2.04 (95% CI: 1.94‐2.15)]. Similar trends observed CVD mortality. The individuals 1.80 1.63‐1.99)], diabetic 1.78 1.60‐1.98)]. Conclusion This large study identified that main driver all studied, being riskiest. Given high prevalence both conditions Mexico, our results reinforce importance initiating prevention strategies from an early age.
