ABSTRACT
It has been demonstrated that physical exercise benefits younger patients undergoing allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). We designed a prospective pilot study investigating whether elderly (>60 years) would also be able to participate in such programme. consisted of physiotherapist-supervised alternating endurance and resistance workouts on 6 7 days week. Sixteen consecutive allo-HSCT were enrolled into the study. The median age was 64.5 years. Twelve participated programme until time discharge (75%) from transplant unit. Therefore, predefined criteria regarding feasibility met. reason for drop out associated mortality all (n = 4). Adherence very good with 85% attended training sessions. No adverse events recorded. capacity dropped by 7% lower extremity strength improved 2% over time. Quality life decreased during period, global health being significantly worse at discharge. In conclusion, combined intensified is feasible safe population allo-HSCT. Further research should focus exploring effect sizes an intervention conducting randomised controlled trials.
