ABSTRACT
Abstract Background Fungal infections are still a relevant challenge for clinicians involved in the cure of patients with cancer. We retrospectively reviewed charts hospitalized haematological malignancies (HMs), which documented fungaemia was diagnosed between January 2011 and December 2015 at 28 adult 6 paediatric Italian Hematology Departments. Methods During study period, we recorded 215 fungal bloodstream (BSI). Microbiological analyses that BSI due to moulds 17 (8%) yeasts 198 (92%), being Candida spp identified 174 (81%). Results Mortality rates were 70% 39% mould yeast infections, respectively. Infection main cause death 53% 18% groups. At multivariate analysis, ECOG ≥ 2 septic shock significantly associated increased mortality, removal central venous catheter (CVC) survival found be protective. When considering candidemia only, CVC statistically overall mortality. Conclusions Although represents group good prognosis, its risk factors largely overlap those all fungaemias, even though candidemia‐related mortality is lower when compared other BSI. Management complex issue, both disease characteristics should focused address personalized approach.
