CHARITABLE GIVING, EMOTIONS, AND THE DEFAULT EFFECT

ABSTRACT
We report an experiment to study the effect of defaults on charitable giving. In three different treatments, participants face varying default levels donation. other treatments that are paired with first three, they receive same defaults, but informed thought have their donation decisions. The emotional state all individuals is monitored throughout sessions using Facereading software, and some required after decision. find level at which a set has no donations, informing possible impact also effect. Individuals who happier in more positive overall donate more. Donors experience negative change valence subsequent donating, when measured software. This contrasts self‐report data, donating correlates reported state. ( JEL C91)
