Characterising a diversity of coastal community fisheries in Kiribati and Vanuatu

ABSTRACT
Abstract Understanding what diversity of small‐scale fisheries translates to in practice, and this means for management regimes seeking sustainability, continues be a challenging undertaking. This is particularly so the tropical Pacific Islands region, where coastal play significant role domestic food livelihood systems. A renewed regional policy focus on supporting fisheries, combined with momentum built from decades‐long ‘Pacific renaissance’ community‐based approaches, has increased resourcing support fishery data collection knowledge production. In context, there growing demand explicitly characterise complexity inform how national co‐management programs can adequately many communities within constituencies. study presents findings monitoring programme implemented ten across Kiribati Vanuatu between 2019 2021. Findings illustrate intra‐ inter‐country contextual drivers, fishing practices, fisher participation. We discuss implications enhanced understanding applied practice these two countries. doing so, we add base about practices Island elucidate avenues through which incorporate into adaptive practice.
