Optimizing the implementation of lung cancer screening in Scotland: Focus group participant perspectives in the LUNGSCOT study

ABSTRACT
Abstract Introduction Targeted lung cancer screening is effective in reducing and all‐cause mortality according to major trials the United Kingdom Europe. However, best ways of implementing local communities requires an understanding population programme will serve. We undertook a study explore views those potentially eligible for, identify potential barriers facilitators taking part in, screening, inform development feasibility study. Methods Men women aged 45–70, living urban rural Scotland, either self‐reported people who smoke or recently quit, were invited take via research agency Taylor McKenzie. Eleven men 14 took three virtual focus groups exploring their on screening. Focus group transcripts transcribed analysed using thematic analysis, assisted by QSR NVivo. Findings Three overarching themes identified: (1) Knowledge, awareness acceptability , (2) Barriers (3) Promoting implementation ideas . Participants largely supportive principle described importance early detection cancer. Emotional psychological concerns as well system‐level practical issues discussed posing Conclusions Understanding for health check can usefully further test Scotland.
