ABSTRACT
Providing self-management support is an appropriate task for community nurses. However, the of sometimes triggers tensions in practice. The aim this study was to explore nurses' views self-management, dilemmas nurses face when providing by older adults and strategies they use solve these challenges. A qualitative performed collect data. Twenty-one from eastern part Netherlands were recruited through purposive sampling. interviews audiotaped, transcribed verbatim a thematic analysis carried out. results show that find it difficult give clear, definitive description concept self-management. They relate 'taking control your own life', 'making choices decisions' 'being self-reliant'. Situations which exhibit considerable or little self-direction self-reliance can lead conflicts support, namely: 1) 'striving optimal health well-being versus respecting adults' choices' 2) 'stimulating accepting dependent attitude'. Different are applied resolve scenarios. In first case, 'adapting', 'persuading' control' used, second case 'empowering', challenging' 'tolerating' used. Creating clear shared understanding 'self-management' facilitating reflect on their might help them supporting adults.
