ABSTRACT
The prevalence and patterns of insulinaemia in five groups patients with Type 1 diabetes have been reinvestigated using a free insulin assay which minimizes vitro redistribution the antibody-bound components. In 18 diabetic managed by conventional injection treatment 19 treated continuous subcutaneous infusion (CSII), mean 24-h serum level exceeded non-diabetic reference range 78% (injections) 68% (CSII). Twenty-four-hour profiles showed that hyperinsulinaemia occurred basal state before meals at night, but not immediately post-prandially. concentration 0800 h, 1200 1600 h was significantly (p less than 0.001) correlated injection-treated CSII patients, samples one these time-points may thus provide simple, single measure integrated for population studies. There no significant difference levels 7 randomly crossed-over between CSII, had more physiological pattern during post-prandial higher on injections (mean +/- SE = 37.2 3.1 vs 26.9 2.5 mU l-1, p 0.01).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
