ABSTRACT
Studies in Britain have shown that adults who had a low birthweight high plasma glucose concentrations 30 and 120 min after an oral load, increased risk of Type 2 diabetes impaired tolerance. Both are common India. To determine whether is associated with reduced tolerance Indian children, tests were carried out on 379 4‐year‐old whose birthweights recorded, Pune, Among 201 children been looked the routine postnatal wards at birth, those lower higher insulin independently their current size ( p = 0.01 0.04, respectively). Mean 8.1 mmol I −1 321 pmol 2.4 kg or less, compared 7.5 289 weighed more than 3.0 kg. 178 Special Care Baby Unit, also but there no trends glucose. Our findings suggest intra‐uterine growth homeostasis challenge. This consistent hypothesis mellitus India may be programmed fetal life.
