Dietary patterns and risk of Parkinson’s disease: a case–control study in Japan

ABSTRACT
Background: Nearly all epidemiologic studies examining the association between risk of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and diet have focused on single foods specific nutrients. However, evidence for dietary pattern with PD, namely measurement overall by considering cumulative effects nutrients is extremely limited. We conducted a hospital‐based case–control study in Japan to examine relationship patterns PD. Methods: Patients PD diagnosed using UK Society Brain Bank criteria ( n = 249) controls without neurodegenerative diseases 368) were recruited. At time recruitment, intake during preceding 1 month was assessed validated, self‐administered history questionnaire. Dietary from 33 predefined food groups (energy‐adjusted g/day) extracted factor analysis. Results: Three identified: ‘Healthy’, ‘Western’ ‘Light meal’ patterns. After adjustment potential non‐dietary confounding factors, Healthy pattern, characterized high vegetables, seaweed, pulses, mushrooms, fruits fish, inversely associated border‐line significance P trend 0.06). Multivariate Odds ratio (95% confidence intervals) highest quartile 0.54 (0.32–0.92) compared lowest quartile. No associations detected other two Conclusion: In this Japan, consisting intakes fish may be decreased
