Case studies and anecdotal accounts suggest that perinatal loss may impact upon other children in the family, including those born subsequent to loss. However, there is a dearth of systematically collected quantitative data on this potentially vulnerable group.Case-controlled follow-up 52 mothers with history stillbirth their next-born aged 6-8 years, 51 control mother-child dyads. Previously reported baseline included maternal antenatal postnatal psychological assessment, infant security attachment at 12 months. Follow-up assessments psychiatric socio-demographic data, mother teacher-rated scales child's strengths difficulties, child IQ, observer-rated interaction reports health. There were no significant between-group differences cognitive or health assessments, difficulties. (the index group) increased particular peer problems, more adverse was observed respect higher levels criticism actions, overall controlling behaviour by mother, less harmonious emotional atmosphere lower level engagement child. Some these effects appeared be mediated symptoms family breakdown. This study provides evidence siblings after are clinically risk but does lend empirical support clinical such seen as having problems they exposed optimal mothers. Possible interpretations findings discussed context theoretical 'replacement child' 'vulnerable syndromes.
