ABSTRACT
SUMMARY Samples of the lichen Parmelia sulcata Taylor were collected in vicinity 17 air pollution monitoring stations northern part Switzerland and its bordering area. Net photosynthesis, dark respiration, content [ 35 S]‐sulphate S]‐protein after cultivation with SO 4 2− , as well chlorophyll protein contents measured. Mean values respiration not significantly different plant material from various locations. Most mean net photosynthesis differed less than average standard deviation. The rates sulphate uptake synthesis lowest was highest at most polluted sites. by a factor 3.5‐7 between Multiple regression analysis gave linear correlation three physiological parameters S]‐sulphate, combination annual concentrations pollutants NO, NO 2 O 3 . multiple coefficient ( R ) estimated for (0‐84). Its (r) alone 0.91, 0.85.
