ABSTRACT
Abstract Local mechanical responses near single grain boundaries (GBs) of 9.8 mol% Y 2 O 3 ‐stabilized ZrO bicrystals, SrTiO bicrystal, and Al polycrystal were investigated by nanoindentation at room temperature to reveal GB contributions the properties. Contrary concept Hall–Petch strengthening, hardness showed negligible variations among interiors, vicinities, just on GBs in samples. Importantly, may be underestimated owing grooving thermally etched Despite change intrinsic hardness, transmission electron microscopy observation specimen under impressions revealed dislocation pileups GBs. These results suggest that oxide ceramics prevented movement but with limited strengthening contributions. This should correspond macroscopic behaviors ceramics, where coefficients normalized friction stress are significantly smaller than those metals.
