ABSTRACT
Abstract Aim The present study uses marine prosobranchs from shallow waters (down to 200 m) as a model determine biogeographical units along the Brazilian coast and investigate changes in assemblages Western Atlantic. Location Atlantic Ocean. Methods composition species distribution of were determined using secondary data information gathered scientific collections. similarities among areas calculated Sørensen, Simpson Ochiai Indices, illustrated dendrograms constructed by unweighted pair group method arithmetic averages. Ordination analysis was performed non‐metric multi‐dimensional scaling based on similarity matrices. Results As result compilation performed, 700 prosobranch distributed 81 families recorded Brazil. results show clear correlation between geographic distance their faunal similarity. There is gradual latitudinal variation coastline. coastal sustain richer gastropod than oceanic islands. Main conclusions Considering cluster ordination analyses, this proposes divide into four regions: (1) Guyanese Province (Amapá state), (2) North‐eastern Brazil Area (from mouth Amazon southern Bahia, Brazil), (3) South‐eastern Bahia Santa Catarina, Brazil, transition zone), (4) Argentinian (Rio Grande do Sul state). Areas belong Province. insular are distinct other regions studied. Each island has its own waters, while they share with environments.
