ABSTRACT
The aim was to investigate the role of systemic inflammation in relationship between periodontitis, edentulism, and all-cause mortality a group men Northern Ireland aged 58-72 years.A representative sample 1558 had detailed dental examination 2001 2003. primary end point death from any cause. Cox's proportional hazards model used assess longitudinal mortality. Accelerated failure time modelling performed mediating inflammation.Mean age at baseline 64.3 (standard deviation 2.9) years. During median follow-up 17 years, 500 (32.1%) died. After adjustment for confounding variables, compared with no/mild edentulous hazard ratio 1.52 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.16-1.99) p < .01 those severe it 1.34 CI 1.06-1.70) = .01. Systemic accounted only minor pathway effect 10%.There evidence this that who were or periodontitis significantly increased risk not major explanatory mediator association.
