Fragrance contact allergens in 5588 cosmetic products identified through a novel smartphone application

ABSTRACT
More than 25% of the adult European population suffers from contact allergy, with fragrance substances recognized as one main causes. Since 2005, 26 allergens have been mandatory to label in cosmetic products within EU if present at 10 ppm or above leave-on and 100 wash-off cosmetics.To examine exposure, based on ingredient labelling, fragrances a sample 5588 fragranced products.The investigated were identified through novel, non-profit smartphone application (app), designed provide information consumers about chemical products. Products registered app between December 2015 October 2016 checked according International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) for presence wording 'fragrance/parfum/aroma'.The largest product categories 'cream, lotion oil' (n = 1192), 'shampoo conditioner' 968) 'deodorants' 632). Among labelled contain least fragrances, 85.5% 73.9% contained two three respectively. Linalool (49.5%) limonene (48.5%) most often among all Hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde (HICC/Lyral® ) was found 13.5% deodorants. Six less per cent products, including natural extracts Evernia furfuracea (tree moss) prunastri (oak moss). A total 329 (5.9%) had more but did not 'parfum/fragrance/aroma' listed label.Consumers are widely exposed to, multiple, well-established various intended daily use.
