ABSTRACT
Abstract Marine teleost species of commercial interest are often reported with hyperostosis, an osteological condition that results in bone thickening. Various specimens Atlantic Spadefish Chaetodipterus faber ( n = 86) obtained from artisanal fishermen Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were radiographed and assessed to detect the occurrence hyperostosis across four different size classes. Of examined individuals, 58.62% displayed signs which manifested eight skeletal regions, notably supraoccipital crest, cleithrum supraneural areas. In vertebral column, was more frequently observed haemal spines than neural spines, predominantly between sixth eighth caudal vertebrae. The smallest class (<200 mm total length) showed a low frequency at 7.89%. This escalated for larger classes, reaching 94.12% individuals measuring 200–300 length all exceeding 300 mm. Hyperostosis exhibited ontogenetic development pattern, where both frequencies sizes affected bones expanded proportion fish size. is first description pattern species, important resource.
