ABSTRACT
Abstract Aims The aims of this study were to better define the relationship between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and psychiatric disorders examine efficacy paroxetine in treatment IBS patients. Methods One hundred fifty subjects with diagnosis (Roma III criteria) relative sub‐classification (constipated, diarrhea, mixed) assessed for psychopathological features gastrointestinal symptoms using Symptom Severity Score consecutively enrolled . Fifty patients assumed 16 weeks longitudinally evaluated. Results entire sample had a moderate/severe symptomatology (IBS‐SSS 285.1 ± 98.6). subtypes diarrhea (47.3%), constipated (32%), mixed (20.7%). Panic disorder was found 17.4% major depressive episode 14.7%. More than 50% showed “psychopathological features.” This group more severe worse quality life without any comorbidity (44%). Psychiatric also significant impairment physical state, subjective feeling well‐being, leisure activities when compared no When IBS‐SSS > 300 subgrouped (67.2%) (32.8%), we differences all clinician‐administered self‐reported scales ( P < 0.01).
