ABSTRACT
Abstract Astrocytes are glial cells that help maintain brain homeostasis and become reactive in neurodegenerative processes releasing both harmful beneficial factors. We have demonstrated brain‐derived neurotrophic factor ( BDNF ) expression is induced by melanocortins astrocytes but actions largely unknown. hypothesize may prevent astrocyte death resulting neuroprotection. found increased viability, preventing apoptosis serum deprivation decreasing active caspase 3 p53 expression. The anti‐apoptotic action of was abolished ANA ‐12 (a specific TrkB antagonist) K252a general Trk antagonist). only express the receptor TrkB‐truncated isoform 1, TrkB‐T1. ERK , Akt, Src non‐receptor tyrosine kinase) activation astrocytes. Blocking Akt pathways protection deprivation‐induced cell death. Moreover, protected from 3‐nitropropionic acid (3‐ NP ), an effect also blocked ‐12, K252a, inhibitors calcium, Src. reduced oxygen species levels 3‐ xCT glutathione levels. Astrocyte‐conditioned medium ACM untreated partially PC 12 neurons, whereas ‐treated completely neurons ‐induced apoptosis. Both control markedly cells. Our results demonstrate protects through TrkB‐T1 signaling, exerts antioxidant action, induces release neuroprotective factors Open Science Badges This article has received a badge for *Open Materials* because it provided all relevant information to reproduce study manuscript. complete Disclosure form this can be at end article.
