ABSTRACT
Background We have reported that neutrophilic infiltration was associated with round‐shaped dyskeratosis foci, a kind of keratin pearl, oral carcinoma in situ and those inflammatory cells are recruited from intra‐epithelially entrapped blood vessels. Based on these lines evidence, we formulated hypothesis pearls terminally degraded by neutrophils. To confirm this hypothesis, investigated immunohistochemically stepwise degradation squamous cell ( SCC ) to clarify any other type scavenger addition neutrophils involved particular process. Methods Neutrophils (neutrophil elastase) macrophage subpopulations CD 68, 163 204) were localized 30 cases typical pearls. revealed immunohistochemistry for (K) 17, vessels demonstrated 31. Results Keratin pearl process divided into four steps: (i) intact stage: no but minimal found pearls; (ii) neutrophil recruit focal within the (iii) predominant dense macrophages segregated keratinized cancer strongly positive K17; (iv) 68‐, (mononuclear)‐ 204 (multinucleated)‐positive engulfing detached cells. Conclusion is strictly regulated two types cells: neutrophils, which perform initial tasks, macrophages, reciprocally take over role finalize processes.
