ABSTRACT
Background Limited evidence exists in the literature regarding whether a specific mount is preferable to use for processing endoscopically obtained gastrointestinal biopsy specimens. Hypothesis/Objectives To compare 3 methods of handling specimens from collection laboratory and determine if any technique produced superior results. Animals Twenty‐three dogs cats presented signs. Methods Prospective study with signs veterinary teaching referral hospital which underwent upper endoscopy. Biopsy were taken stomach duodenum submitted using techniques: mounted on cucumber slice, moisturized synthetic foam sponge, floating free formalin. The techniques compared regard specimens' width, orientation, presence artifacts, pathologist's confidence diagnosis. Results patients included, total 528 biopsies collected. Specimens slice sponge significantly wider ( P < .001 = .001, respectively) those formalin (mean width 3.81 versus 3.31 2.52 mm, respectively). However, had fewer artifacts .05) .02). Confidence diagnosis also was over .002). Conclusions Clinical Importance This improved quality their histopathologic interpretation.
