ABSTRACT
Abstract Question What factors best characterize tree competitive environments in this structurally diverse old‐growth forest, and do these vary spatially within among stands? Location Old‐growth P icea abies forest of boreal S weden. Methods Using long‐term, mapped permanent plot data augmented with dendrochronological analyses, we evaluated the effect neighbourhood competition on focal growth by means standard indices, each modified to include various metrics trees size, neighbour mortality weighting (for neighbours that died during inventory period), within‐neighbourhood clustering. Candidate models were using mixed‐model linear regression mean basal area increment as response variable. We then analysed stand‐level spatial patterns indices rates ( via kriging) determine if relationship between could further elucidate influencing growth. Results Inter‐tree clearly affected rates, crown volume being size metric most strongly environment. Including weightings only slightly improved descriptions interactions. Although clustering index did not improve model predictions, intensity was influenced underlying arrangement: locally intensified reduced growth, whereas absence such clustering, inter‐tree played a lesser role constraining Conclusions Our findings demonstrate continues influence processes structures an system has experienced major disturbances for at least two centuries. The finding pattern environment suggests caution interpreting traditional studies, which patterning is typically taken into account. highlight importance structure – particularly arrangement regulating forests, they provide insight causes consequences heterogeneity system.
