ABSTRACT
Summary Sweet orange ( C itrus sinensis ), one of the most important fruit crops worldwide, may suffer from disease symptoms induced by virus infections, thus resulting in dramatic economic losses. Here, we show that infection sweet plants with two isolates psorosis CPsV ) expressing different symptomatology alters accumulation a set endogenous microRNAs miRNAs ). Within these , miR156 miR167 and miR171 were down‐regulated, almost three‐fold reduction infected samples. This down‐regulation led to concomitant up‐regulation some their targets, such as S quamosa promoter‐binding protein‐like 9 13 well carecrow‐like 6 . The processing miRNA precursors, pre‐mi R 156 171, seems be affected virus. For instance, increases level unprocessed which is accompanied decrease mature species accumulation. primary transcript remained unaltered, strongly suggesting deregulation for this transcript. co‐immunoprecipitation viral 24 K protein or 171 suggests alteration precursors might caused direct indirect interaction particular protein. result also consistent nuclear localization both study contributes understanding manner can alter host regulatory mechanisms, particularly biogenesis target expression.
