ABSTRACT
Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are of great medical and veterinary importance because the haematophagous females some species can transmit diseases to humans animals. In order determine presence seasonal abundance bluetongue virus (BTV) vector insignis Lutz at domestic animal sheds in northeastern Brazil, insects were collected once a month between January December 2010. Light traps set from 18.00 06.00 hours pigsty, chicken coop bovine corral. accounted for 81% 22,316 specimens collected. Other well-represented were: paucienfuscatus Barbosa (3246 individuals), diabolicus Hoffman (308), leopoldoi Ortiz (224) duartei Tavares Luna Dias (221). The remainder 4% total sample. occurred mostly cattle corral, 98.2% rainy season. This study confirms close association C. with Maranhão state, Brazil emphasizes risk infections spreading area.
