ABSTRACT
Accurate diagnosis of mucormycosis, a life-threatening fungal infection, remains challenge for physicians. To identify the causative Mucorales in fresh clinical samples and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) patients with proven mucormycosis by molecular method.Fresh according to EORTC/MSG criteria admitted between 2015 2017 histopathologically FFPE archives collected during 2004-2007 2015-2017 from Mazandaran University-affiliated hospitals northern Iran were included. Seminested PCR targeting 18S rDNA ITS region was performed, products then sequenced. While culture positive only 5 9 (56%) specimen cases, all (100%) histologically mucormycosis. Ten 18 PCR-positive. Overall, 19 27 (70%) samples. species Rhizopus arrhizus 16 (84%) R. arrhizus/Amylomyces rouxii 2 (10.5%) cases stolonifer one case (5.5%). Among 25 (93%) rhinocerebral, (7%) disseminated. Diabetes mellitus (74%) neutropaenia (63%) main risk factors.Seminested is useful identification agents
