ABSTRACT
Intensive care unit (ICU) discharges are challenging practices that carry risks for patients. Despite the existing body of knowledge, there still difficulties in clinical practice concerning unplanned ICU discharges, specifically where is no step-down unit.The aim this study was to explore general ward nurses' experiences caring patients being discharged from an ICU.Data were collected focus groups and in-depth interviews with a total 16 nurses three different hospitals Sweden. An inductive qualitative design chosen.The analysis revealed themes reflect challenges nursing former patients: vulnerable patient, powerlessness organizational structure. The described challenge fragile patient based on several aspects. They expressed feeling unrealistic demands when patient. related their own profession knowledge regarding how group structure had impact could be realized. This evoked ethical concerns cope as organization's guidelines did not always favour patients.The organization its leadership appear have significant ability offer they need.This sheds light need extended outreach services intermediate order meet needs after intensive period.
