ABSTRACT
Abstract Nitrogen (N) is an essential macronutrient for crop growth and yield. Improving the N use efficiency (NUE) of crops important to agriculture. However, molecular mechanisms underlying NUE regulation remain largely elusive. Here we report that OsNLP3 (NIN‐like protein 3) regulates grain yield in rice under sufficient conditions. transcript level significantly induced by starvation its nucleocytosolic shuttling specifically regulated nitrate. Loss‐of‐function reduces plant growth, yield, nitrate conditions, whereas low or different ammonium osnlp3 mutants show no clear difference from wild type. Importantly, conditions field, overexpression lines display improved compared with orchestrates expression multiple uptake assimilation genes directly binding nitrate‐responsive cis ‐elements their promoters. Overall, our study demonstrates OsNLP3, together OsNLP1 OsNLP4, plays overlapping differential roles acquisition NUE, modulates increase promoted fertilizer. Therefore, a promising candidate gene genetic improvement rice.
