ABSTRACT
Stress-related disorders and severe stress exposure can cause atrophy of the whole hippocampus its subfields. However, impact coping strategies on remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to examine relation between approach- avoidance-oriented hippocampal volume in elderly persons.A total 1045 persons living Arakawa-ward, Tokyo (mean ± SD age: 72.8 5.2 years; 569 females [54.4%]) were included study completed several questionnaires face-to-face interviews underwent magnetic resonance imaging. Approach- or assessed with Stress Coping Inventory, while cognitive function depressive symptoms Mini-Mental State Examination Geriatric Depression Scale, respectively. The T1-weighted images was delineated calculated using FreeSurfer 6.0. Multiple regression analyses performed Inventory scores volume.Approach-oriented strategy positively correlated volume. Furthermore, these relations remained significant after controlling for influence volumetric variables. In contrast, not volume. This demonstrated that may be associated approach-oriented strategy; therefore, this preserve elderly.
