ABSTRACT
We are entering an era of great expectations towards our cities. The vision “smart city” has been pursued worldwide to transform urban habitats into superior efficiency, quality, and sustainability. This phenomenon prompts us ponder what role the scholars in operations management (OM) can assume. In this essay, we express initial thoughts on expanding OM smart‐city scope. review initiatives governments, industry, national laboratories academia. argue that movement will transition from tech‐oriented stage decision‐oriented stage. Hence, a smart city be perceived as system scope within which planning operational decisions orchestrated at scale, reflective multi‐dimensional needs, adaptive massive data innovation. benefits studying manifold significant: contributing deeper understanding cities by providing advanced analytical frameworks, pushing knowledge boundaries (such data‐driven decision making), empowering community deliver much broader impacts than before. discuss several research opportunities embody these thoughts, interconnected contexts buildings, grid, mobility new retail. These arise increasing integration systems business models scale.
