Abstract The rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ), originally from North America, was introduced to Mexico in 1888 and gradually distributed various areas of the country. Currently, are cultivated under a number production systems, but this sector has grown less than 1% annually for last 10 years. present review analysed status Mexico, describing key situations actors that have influenced establishment current level aquaculture development. Since its beginnings, cultivation depended on egg import due insufficient fry by national hatcheries. Moreover, industry is deficient regard aspects management processes, with notable necessity specialists production, health sanitary diagnosis rapidly efficiently respond such as low productivity or presence diseases. With specialists, appropriate control prevention decisions could be taken acted upon. Likewise, Mexican high development potential market expectations, growth will require active participation commitment competent authorities, compliance established regulations laws, which oriented towards advancing protecting fish farming industry.
