Current practices in perioperative blood management for patients undergoing liver resection: a survey of surgeons and anesthesiologists

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND Development of intraoperative techniques and blood management strategies in liver resection, the multidisciplinary nature perioperative transfusion decision making, creates an opportunity for practice variation. The aim this study was to describe current practices explore differences between surgeons anesthesiologists. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS A Web‐based survey developed, piloted, circulated Canadian focused on preoperative anemia, conservation strategies, estimation loss, making a setting. RESULTS total 198 physicians received survey, with 117 responding (59%). Most (67%) perform more than 20 resections per year, while most anesthesiologists (90%) take part fewer 20. Anesthesiologists commonly stated that anemia is managed by someone else (38%), reported “no specific treatment” (45%). common technique used administration antifibrinolytics (63% them at least occasionally). important factor when deciding hemoglobin value (47%); surgeons, it patient hemodynamics (33%). Compared they started their career, 60% respondents felt were less likely transfuse now. CONCLUSION results our provide insights into including comparison anesthesiologist surgeon behavior.
