ABSTRACT
Abstract Objective To determine the effect of Yunnan Baiyao (YB) on hemostatic parameters measured by thromboelastography (TEG) in apparently healthy cats administered 1 capsule YB orally twice daily for week. Design Prospective study client‐owned at a small animal specialty hospital. Setting One private referral center. Animals Twenty adult were prospectively enrolled. Interventions All underwent echocardiographic examination same board‐certified cardiologist to rule out occult cardiomyopathy. Blood samples collected analysis baseline CBC, fibrinogen, and kaolin‐activated TEG values. Cats (250 mg/capsule) week physical examination, re‐evaluated. Any side effects attributed noted this time. Measurements Main Results Three excluded as 2 identified with underlying cardiomyopathy another cat had cystic mass cranial mediastinum via echocardiography. Seventeen treated YB; however, could not complete due severe vomiting associated administration. The remaining 16 completed study, although additional experienced transient vomiting. administration was significant decrease HCT red blood cell count, no became anemic. None significantly changed compared after therapy. Conclusions results suggest dose fails produce any change TEG, it did reduce count. tolerated most cats, 3 17 (17.6%) Clinicians should be aware these before considering use cats.
