HIV‐positive blood donors unaware of their sexual at‐risk behaviours before donation in Italy

ABSTRACT
Despite the procedures adopted for selection of blood donors, in Italy HIV prevalence per 100 000 repeat tested donors (RTD) and first-time (FTD) is high compared to most other Council Europe member states. To evaluate effectiveness predonation procedures, we studied both characteristics undisclosed risk behaviours HIV-positive donors.We analysed data from Italian donor surveillance system 2009, 2010 2011. Based on postdonation interview, were classified by behaviour (heterosexual, MSM, 'non-sexual' 'not determined') time elapsed donation. In Italy, temporary deferral exposure at 4 months.In 113 (32·4%), who denied at-risk selection, reported sexual <4 months prior donation; they predominantly males (84·1%) RTD (63·7%). The main reason not having was realizing engaged behaviour' (66·4%).These findings underline need more comprehensible educational material, a clearer questionnaire, effective information campaigns improve awareness among donors.
